  • Ya for conforming! My Top 10 albums of 2009.

    26 Dec 2009, 02:50 by limecrescent

Everyone is doing this and as I am bored and want to continue putting off the paper I have to write for Brit-Lit I am going to make a top 10 albums of 2009 list. I'm only allowing myself one song to favorite from each album.

#10 Opheliac - The Deluxe Edition
I know it is technically a re-release of Opheliac by Emilie Autumn, but it is such an amazing album packed with some extra goodies like acoustic versions of Asleep, Mad Girl, and PlayThe Art of Suicide, as well as excerpts from her book The Asylum for Wayward Girls and Emilie Autumn interviewing herself.

Favorite from original album: PlayShalott just because I can relate to the song, without the whole dying part...
Favorite "bonus" from deluxe edition: Gloomy Sunday, because it has so much emotion & EA showing off her mad violin skillz.
And yes I can so do the two favorites for this particular album. I know it should be higher ranked, but like I said it is technically a re-release

#9 Dancing The Whole Way Home
Yes, I only know Miss Li because of the iPod nano commercial showing off her song PlayBourgeois Shangri-La. The entire album can put you in a good mood, even the more depressing tracks like PlayStupid Girl.

    Favorite: PlayPolythene Queen
These lyrics pretty much encompass why this song is my favorite off the album:
"Pretty Lady, beauty, botox and champagne
    What's inside that polythene brain?
Yes I can see that you are bothered by me
    Behind that fashion magazine
    And your new shiny teeth
Your world is made of polythene
Your shoes, your face, your limousine
And you don't care 'bout anything
But your plastic life and stupid things
    So read your magazine
Just live your plastic shallow dream"

    #8 The Fame Monster
Lady GaGa is as talented as she is insane, which is why I can give her credit for an album well-done. I know she is popular and I am not one to easily give in to current popular artists, but she seems to be one of the few new artists that have talent.

Favorite: PlayTeeth, because it has such a great beat and (if this offends anyone I'm sorry) the music sounds like gypsy-ish music. The lyrics are completely what you would expect from Lady GaGa: provocative, slightly disturbing and wacky.

    #7 Ellipse
Imogen Heap is a completely unique artist. I have only recently started to listen to her work, but she is quickly becoming a favorite of mine and her latest release only continues to proves what a talent she is. After listening to the single PlayFirst Train Home I eagerly awaited the album and it did not disappoint.

Favorite: PlayEarth, being the big eco-friendly girl I am I love how this song is written in the Earth's point of view and she almost makes the Earth sound like a tired mother/housewife...it's just a great song.
"You're not golden and I'm getting tired
Act like you own the place when really you've only just arrived
I caught first glimmers in hides and skins
Look who's all grown up, black swanning about the solar winds
You're gonna lose it all and find yourself on your knees
So get a grip and you might flow reverse the great slow bleed
I've tried patience but you always want a war
    This house won't tolerate anymore"

"The cold shoulder, folded arms, the looking up
You've never listened and carry on careless regardless
This is not a fire drill and if we hold any hope
It's harmonic connection, in stereo symbiosis
These Legoland empires choking out mine
Now you're everywhere, everywhere multiplying around me child
    A strain on my heart
    This rock can't tolerate anymore
    Do you love me?
Get only what you give back"

    #6 Lungs (Deluxe Version)
I have only recently begun listening to Florence + The Machine, but I am quickly falling in love.

Favorite: PlayKiss With A Fist, mainly because this was the first song I had ever heard by them, my friend HerDarkestHour played it for me.

    #5 This Is The One
Utada's album was the only thing that kept me from lashing out at people at my job during the summer, seriously. All I had to do was plug in my headphones and put on PlayThis One (Crying Like A Child) and ignore those annoying teenage brats at the pool.

Favorite: PlayApple And Cinnamon because I just like it, it's a cute yet sad break up song.

#4 (500) Days of Summer (Music from the Motion Picture)
This is one of the best soundtracks for a movie I have ever heard, second only to Pirate Radio/The Boat that Rocked. What got me intrigued was that Zooey Deschanel sings on it and I love her voice, as well as Regina Spektor, Wolfmother and The Smiths.

Favorite: It is super difficult to just pick one, but it has to be There Is a Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths

    #3 I Dreamed A Dream
How is picking Susan Boyle's album even an option? It must be on this list, she is so incredibly talented and beautiful in my eyes that she has got to be on my list.

Favorite: PlayI Dreamed A Dream, I love showtunes and this one is so touching in Les Miserables and sung by Susan it is even that more lovelier. Although PlayWild Horses was amazing, as well.

#2 The Boat that Rocked (Music from the Motion Picture) / Pirate Radio (Music from the Motion Picture)
They are the same album, although I think one track is different. The movie has a ton of awesome songs, but I still love the album...even if it doesn't have every single song from the movie in it. The movie struck a chord with me (crap, bad pun, I apologize!) and the soundtrack has some great classics in it.

Favorite: PlayElenore by The Turtles and I'm going to break my rule here and say one more song, PlayYou Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield.

    #1 Far (Bonus Track Version)
Honestly, this album is the only non-soundtrack album on here that I can listen to all the way through without skipping a song, so that is one reason it gets top place. The next and most important reason is that this is Regina Spektor we are talking about, her work is amazing.

Favorites: changes almost constantly, but The Calculation

It's a pity the two soundtracks don't have links, oh well. Check them out on iTunes, Amazon, or whatever.

  • My Hummingbird 100 Female Songs of all-time which I voted for + some more

    17 Nov 2009, 17:55 by BlackCoffeeDuck

This from the HOTTEST FEMALE SONGS!!! Kind-off like Triple J's Hottest 100 of All-time early in the year but only female artists because there was very few women in Triple J's countdown. It's run by a new beer called Hummingbird and some pay TV channel (I don't know which one because I don't watch it). It's a cool idea and I found it so hard to cut it down just to ten in the end so I just made my own 100 tracks from my favourite female artists.

    My Top Ten Votes
    1. Portishead - Glory Box
    2. Kate Bush - PlayCloudbusting
    3. Sarah Blasko - Play{Explain}
    4. Nina Simone - PlaySinnerman
    5. Fiona Apple - PlayFast as You Can
    6. Björk - PlayArmy Of Me
    7. Cat Power - Cross Bones Style
    8. Beth Orton - PlayStolen Car
    9. PJ Harvey - PlayThis Is Love
    10. Magic Dirt - Dirty Jeans

This was very, very, very, very hard (have I made it clear how hard this was?) But I picked songs which I could listen to on repeat which I have done in the past (not here on last.fm yet). Most tracks are from the 90's too (I grew-up in that decade, if you haven't all ready guessed). It seems like last.fm's journals are made up of long lists of songs so I've joined in again with my very, very long short list of songs that didn't make it into the top ten. These songs can be any thing that I love really It's from A to Z (well it's Y really, then V). It's selected from the list of tracks which are on their website but I've added a few of my own ones at the end. If you have no idea what I'm talking about go here and read all about it (there's only 4 days left to vote so hop too it).

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - PlayDown By The Riverside
    The Triffids - Raining Pleasure
The White Stripes - In the Cold, Cold Night
    Vashti Bunyan - PlayRainbow River

So that is it. It wasn't so hard really (but cutting it down to ten was). I've most likely missed something which I'll remember later and be kicking myself about but I'm pretty happy with this mix. It seems my favorite female singer songwriter is Beth Gibbons with my number 1 track in my top ten. Plus two more Portishead songs and one from Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man project album. If you don't know she wrote My Secret for Jane Birkin a few years ago too. That adds up to five tracks out of one hundred which is not many but more that anyone else.

Anyway what do you think??? I liked writing these journal entries but I do like reading you comments and It's also the only way I can tell if anyone has been reading or looking at them. Thanks and bye for now.

  • 45/1001 Dusty Springfield - A Girl Called Dusty (1964)

    15 Nov 2009, 16:47 by darren86

This is actually really good. Dusty Springfield has a great voice and I think most people have heard most of these tracks. PlayMama Said and PlayWill You Love Me Tomorrow? are outstanding, and for the life of me I can't get Wishin' and Hopin' out of my head. However, this is no masterpiece with a rendition of PlayMockingbird being too annoying to listen to again. This is a average album which is good in comparison to some of the albums in the challenge.

    My rating: 2/5

  • Top 35 albums (with some very limited commentary as well)

    10 Oct 2009, 21:31 by david5970

Thought I'd post this chart with some added commentary from me to make it a little bit more interesting than the usual long laundry list that usually gets posted on these journals from time to time.

Kind of interesting to note that there are a number of artists in my top 25 list, that aren't featured here at all, those being Johnny Cash; Beyoncé; Girls Aloud; Alan Jackson; Dixie Chicks (those actually being in my top ten overall); Mariah Carey; Kylie Minogue; Rihanna; Vince Gill; Clint Black; Gwen Stefani; Christina Aguilera; Destiny's Child; and Avril Lavigne.

(14 in all, or over half of my top 25 not represented in my top 35 albums)

I also guess some of the Greatest Hits albums may have skewed the results as well. Still, here is the list:

    david5970's top albums (overall)
    1. Garth Brooks - The Hits (28) For all the essential Garth Brooks songs2. Dusty Springfield - Classics & Collectibles (1) (24)
Dusty was just fantastic when you look at some of the songs on this album: PlayI Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, PlayI Only Want To Be With You, PlayThe Look Of Love. The whole thing is just pure class of the highest order. 3. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (22)
One of the greatest albums of the nineties, I actually rediscovered it a little while ago. Of course, I love all the hit songs from it, but had forgotten just how great the rest of the album was as well. 4. Nat King Cole - The Ultimate Collection (21)
Just some effortless singing at the piano. PlaySmile currently my most played from this album is just an example. 5. Elvis Presley - Elvis: 30 #1 Hits (20)
Elvis: do you really want me to say anything more? Do I need to say anything more? :) 6. Trisha Yearwood - Songbook: A Collection of Hits (20)
Great singer; nice collection of good songs 7. ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits (19)
Just essential for those moments that only ABBA seem to do, fantastic unadulterated pop that just makes you smile and dance. What can be better than that? 8. The Mavericks - Trampoline (18)
Good fun album - always had a soft spot for PlayDolores 9. Texas - The Greatest Hits (18)
Got a lot of plays from my library radio with PlaySummer Son with 12 plays, although it may not be my favorite song of theirs. Go figure! LOL 10. Madness - Divine Madness (17)
PlayLovestruck is an underrated gem. 11. The Corrs - The Best of the Corrs (17)
Have always loved the Corrs, just loved how they were seemingly fresh and different than anything else around at the turn of the millenium.12. Bananarama - The Greatest Hits Collection (17)
Unadulterated pop again, this time from the SAW stable. Hey, I grew up with this stuff in the late 80s as a tweenager. 13. Garbage - Garbage (16)
Never really appreciated them that much until years later when I just put this CD on and realised what I might have missed. 14. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (16)
The more I listen, the more I like. Discovered her by reading an article in some magazine in the mid-90s and deciding just to take a chance on hearing some of her stuff. Kind of a diversion from my usual listening habits at the time but happy that I did. PlayFuck and Run is amazing.15. The Mavericks - Music for All Occasions (16)
Another Mavericks album, boy, they were good :) 16. Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business (16)
PlayDon't Phunk With My Heart and PlayDon't Lie just remind me of driving through Atlanta listening to Star 94 in 2005. 17. Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On (16)
The Hard Way, He Thinks He'll Keep Her, Passionate Kisses, I Take My Chances; just love them one and all! 18. Dean Martin - The Very Best of Dean Martin (16)
Come on, it's Dino. You can't get much cooler than that. 19. Manfred Mann - The Best Of Manfred Mann (16)
Great sixties pop music. Pretty Flamingo. 20. Deana Carter - Did I Shave My Legs For This? (16)
Strawberry Wine and the title track. 21. Matt Monro - The Very Best of Matt Monro (16)
Perfect combination of a good singer and good songs. 22. Kelis - Kelis Was Here (15)
Actually surprised that this album is in here, as Tasty is my favorite album of hers. Still PlayLil Star is a good track 23. P!nk - Try This (15)
P!nk is one of my favorite artists, although this isn't necessarily my favorite album of hers (that's I'm Not Dead) 24. Roy Orbison - The Very Best of Roy Orbison (14)
The Big O - nothing more needs to be said. One of the best and most distinctive voices in the history of pop music. 25. Mindy McCready - If I Don't Stay the Night (14)
Have always liked Mindy ever since she first burst onto the scene. Just makes me wonder how successful she may have been now if she hadn't had all those problems that have dogged her. Still, there are some great and often sadly now forgotten songs in her back catalogue. 26. S Club 7 - Sunshine (14)
Don't Stop Movin' to the S Club beat. Good unadulterated 2000s pop. 27. Harry Connick, Jr. - Forever For Now (14)
Recipe For Love and You Didn't Know Me When are two of my favorite songs of his. 28. Pam Tillis - All of This Love (14)
PlayDeep Down and PlayBetty's Got a Bass Boat have seven plays each. 29. Sugababes - Taller in More Ways (13)
Push The Button and Ugly are two great songs. They made some of the best pop music in the 2000s.30. Paramore - RIOT! (13)
To be honest, just getting into Paramore; loving this album. 31. Restless Heart - Greatest Hits (13)
This is in the list just because I absolutely adore PlayWhen She Cries 32. Aaron Tippin - Ultimate Aaron Tippin (13)
There Ain't Nothin' Wrong With The Radio has got the most plays in my library, although PlayTen Pound Hammer is perhaps my fave song, just good fun. 33. All Saints - All Saints (13)
Absolutely LOVE All Saints. favorite track off their debut album was/is Bootie Call . Saw them perform at a wind and rainsoaked Radio One Roadshow in Blackpool. Wish they were still recording together, it's so damn annoying thinking that they have deprived us of more All Saints material (for evidence just check out Appleton. Absolutely adored Melanie Blatt. Those lips.... :)~~~~~ LOL 34. Gretchen Peters - The Secret of Life (13)
Isn't PlayOn A Bus To St. Cloud one of the greatest songs ever written? Actually prefer this version to Trisha's as well.35. Danity Kane - Welcome to the Dollhouse (13)
More of a discovery on last.fm than anything else... was just recommended to me on this site.

Lily Allen - PlayAlfie ... sweet and innocent, but then it's not
