    Duke Special is one of Ireland's best musicians. Sporting a physical appearance not unlike The Cure's Robert Smith (I'm sure I've said this before - credit goes to Quincy for identifying that particular similarity, though) and a voice not unlike an Irish Rufus Wainwright, I first heard of the Duke when he supported The Divine Comedy on tour in October 2006; I didn't attend any of these shows (the nearest was at Warwick, my parents were away and I had seen TDC in concert a few months prior), but my darling ladyfriend Carolyn attended their show in her home province of Belgium and had good things to say about the chap. …

    So, a quick note about last night's excellent Duke Special gig (Wed 21 Feb – Duke Special, Stephanie Dosen).

    First up, support by American singer-songwriter Stephanie Dosen, who was lovely. Nice little songs with good string accompaniment and some humorous asides and stories between songs. Very enjoyable.

    Following a little wait, the Teddy Bear's Picnic announced the impending arrival of the Duke. From the moment he climbed up on to his piano stool to sing the opening number, I Think I Am Losing You, I could tell we were in for a special night.

    There was too much going on for me to record it all (there always seems to be at Duke gigs), but I'll try to pick out the highlights. Although I think most of the vening was one long highlight.

    Brixton Leaves, as ever, sounded amazing. It was great to hear an old favourite like Don't Breathe - don't think I've heard this played for ages, if at all. I loved the crowd singing, especially on Last Night I Nearly Died and Portrait (I…
