Hmmm! I know Strayhorn was good, A Train is a great tune, and the Duke ran a superb band - but I find it extremely hard to relate to the Duke as a pianist. While listening to the Duke's lengthy introduction to this I was either wishing I was listening to Basie (brilliant minimalist) or someone like a Peterson who can keep complex themes driving along. Having said all that, once the band comes in, I just let the sounds wave over me. (Genuinely happy to hear from anhyone who wants to persuade me that the Duke really was a great pianist - and, please believe me, I'm not knocking him on any other level)
