• 2009 Albums List & Ratings

    13 Jun 2009, 15:55 by VirusOfLife92

    This is (obviously) by no means complete yet as we're only about halfway done with the year at the moment, but might as well put this up now. Ratings are certainly not final and will more likely than not change after more and more listens, but feel free to criticize/praise them as I welcome and encourage any comments on the list. Recommendations are also greatly welcomed and appreciated.

    One quick note, all albums rated as "n/a" are albums that I currently have not listened to and/or have not been released yet.

    3 Segundos Antes da Queda - 3 Segundos Antes De Queda (screamo) 7.25/10
    A Fine Frenzy - Bomb in a Birdcage (singer-songwriter) 8.25/10
    A Wilhelm Scream - A Wilhelm Scream (melodic hardcore) 8/10
    Absu - Absu (black metal) 8/10
    Across Tundras - Herds of the Fathomless Valleys (sludge/progressive metal) 7/10
    Age Sixteen - Open Up Finders, Please (screamo) 8/10
    Ahab - The Divinity of Oceans (funeral doom metal) 6/10
  • Top Albums 2008

    Here are twenty albums I enjoyed from 2008. There were tons of good albums this year, but not very many that I would call brilliant - 2007 had more of those. This made the ordering very difficult, so it is still very approximate (in some cases arbitrary).

    I'm certain I'm forgetting some important releases, and also I just like to hear other people's opinions, so you should all comment with your favorites!

    1. Menace Ruine - In Vulva Infernum AND ALSO Cult of Ruins AND ALSO The Die is Cast

    * unique drone and ambient black metal. 3 albums in one year; how prolific!

    2. Panopticon - Panopticon

    * awesome anarchist black metal

    3. Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle pt. 1

    * very good sludgy metal. Not much black though.

    4. Toxic Holocaust - An Overdose of Death

    * crossover-style oldschool thrash

    5. Boris - Smile

    * it's Boris.

    6. Slug's Revenge - Revenge is Never a Four Letter Word

    * anarchist folk music played at a punk tempo

  • Projects worth to check out

    Nearly unknown bands and projects that deserve attention!

    Updated on 29/09/09

    Brilliant experimental & atmospheric soundscapes that float between post-rock, neo-folk, black metal and ambient.

    The latest full-length is more than worth to check out!

    (The first release, and an ep can be downloaded for free!)

    Great progressive and experimental (black) metal/ambient.

    Best mix of post-rock, dark rock and post-punk of this time.

    Highly recommended!

    Most eerie and uncomfortable "music" I've ever heard. A mix between black metal, industrial and more!

    Art of Empathy

    Emotional atmospheric rock with neofolk/darkwave influenced. Extremely good!

    (The only album can be downloaded for free, recommended!)

    A very experimental & variable band/project that is free from all the clichés, I highly recommend their latest record "FÜHRER".

    All their releases a free for download everywhere!
