Midi just sounds as good as the technology allows it to sound. The technology back then was certainly not quite as good as it is now, but that has nothing to do with it being midi or not. I guess I'm getting defensive because I happen to be a serious e-drummer and this is one of my favorite songs. :-)

Machine of a Dream, perhaps the "guy who said the drum part "sounds like midi" is referring to the playing dynamics, timing, and sound. It's so steady it almost sounds like midi programmed drums. It's pretty cool that he can play so consistently, but speaking generally, I feel the drum qualities are a little sterile.
