Nottingham, United Kingdom (2002 – 2007)

Dragonflies Draw Flame were a 5-piece Nottingham/Derby-based band, active between autumn 2002 and autumn 2007. In that time, they slowly evolved from a folky band, in the Seafood vein, to incorporate elements of , and .

The original line-up was Simon Curd and Thomas Crabb on guitars and vocals, Ian French on drums and Richard Higgs on bass. When Richard left in 2005 his position was filled by Phil Margetts, and simultaneously Robin Brooksbank joined on baritone guitar. April 2006 saw the final change, with Robin leaving, Ian switching to baritone and Pete Currall taking over on drums.

After a slew of early self-released demos, the band teamed up with Derby-based ‘Stressed Records’ to put out the mini-album ‘Harboured Safe’. Recorded at ‘Truck Studio’ in Oxford, and released in February 2006, to mainly positive reviews (and a slating in Kerrang), the CD was later given a Japanese release on ‘Can You Fly Disc’.

Radio 1 took notice and DDF received a handful of plays from Steve Lamacq, Rob da Bank and Huw Stephens, before being invited to Maida Vale for a live session which was later aired on Huw Stephens’ show.

After a quiet first half of 2007, DDF took to the studio in July to record four new songs, and although the sessions went well, other commitments saw the band split before the recordings were even finished.
