"Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were laughing about the fact that I had sent them an album that was half pornographic and half risqué." - He mingled with The Rolling Stones, recorded with Phil Spector, toured with Marvin Gaye, and now he is writing with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. Meet the frankly legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr, better known to the music world as Dr. John: http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/dr_john/

I'm in New Orleans for a couple of days. Was at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop where there's a guy who plays piano and sings at night, similar to Dr. John, he did some Dr. John and other stuff. I know some of the music but didn't know of Dr. John particularly. Thanks! I'll be looking up some records!

I admit I've discovered Dr. John quite recently and because it was Dan Auerbach who co-produced Locked Down but...after listening to this 2012 release I've assumed that his previous albums must be at least as good if not even better so I'll give them a listen. I've started with Gris-gris and it's soooooooooooooooooooooo good...

I first became aware of Dr. John back in the mid-70's, when I was a young teen. Our local album rock station would play cuts from Dr. John's Gumbo, and occasionally from his first album, Gris-Gris, late at night. So I'd go to sleep listening to that stuff. What dreams I had....

Could'a spit out a greatest hits or such instead the good Dr. has gone out and made a gosh darn modern poetic diatribe to every good man's woman's soul. This here is gold.

I'm surprised I've never heard of him before this. Even though it's getting more media attention, isn't that a good thing? If it wasn't for this album, I probably would of never listened to him. Now I have a chance to explore his older material in addition to his newest (which is excellent!)

    April 2012
  • AdamVdE

Oh yeah, other people can't listen to this artists because his newest album is produced by a popular artist. Such bullshit. It's awesome that an old artist like this get's more appreciation from other people trough a younger artist who is already popular. Thus, more people listen to his music.

...I love that a ton of the tracks most listened to are from Gris-Gris. Normally it's all <insert single here> because people who just kinda like this or that song push the singles up really high. But here we have "Mama Roux" at 2 and "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" at 3 and "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" at 9 and "Jump Sturdy," "Danse Kalinda Ba Doom," and "Danse Fambeaux" at 12-14! 6/7 of the album in the top 15! Craziness!
