Sylvia's Mother (3:46)
From Greatest Hits (And More) and 102 other releases
“Sylvia’s Mother” was the first hit song for the band Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show. It was written by Shel Silverstein and was highly successful in the US, reaching #5 there, as well as in Ireland in 1972. “Sylvia’s Mother” also spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Australian music charts in 1972 ranking it as the 15th top single in Australia for that year. It appeared on their first album “Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show.”
The song tells the story of a man trying to say one last goodbye to his ex-girlfriend but is not able to get past her mother, who tries to interfere.
A sequel entitled “Mrs Avery” has been written and performed by UK Folk Rockers “The Men They Couldn’t Hang’‘”. This song begins where “Sylvia’s Mother” ends and concerns what happens next.
