Down 4 The Count started in 2003, with six students who attended CSU Northridge. They were all members of the college vocal jazz ensemble and when the class was cancelled, a small group of student spearheaded by Colleen Keene took it upon themselves to keep the ensemble going. The school reinstated the class after one semester, but Colleen wanted to continue singing in and directing a smaller ensemble. The original ensemble in 2003 was: Colleen Keene, Francesca Delfin, Genevieve Artadi, Tara Romine, Matt Reynolds, and Andreas Preponis. They won second place in the annual Los Angeles Regional Harmony Sweepstakes In 2004, and a few months after that, Tara left the group and Lisa Dunn replaced her. Since Andreas was an exchange student from Germany at that time, when he left to return to Germany, James Adams subbed for him at the 2005 LA Harmony Sweepstakes, where the group did not place.

Andreas returned from Germany in the spring of 2005 for a few weeks because he had become romantically involved with Francesca. They used that time to record a demo, and shortly after, Francesca moved to Germany with Andreas, and Down 4 The Count was on hiatus. At this time, all group members had graduated from CSU Northridge, and Colleen had entered graduate school at CSU Long Beach.
