Based on what I heard live, I wouldn't worry about hearing too much of The National's sound in the new record. It sounds very Doveman-ish...even the duet with Matt Berninger has a hushed quiet feel. I actually don't care for The National at all, but perhaps Thomas' prolonged association with the band will get him the exposure that he so desperately deserves. It'd also be really cool to hear Nico on the new album, so I'm holding out hope for that. Or at least make a trip to Dallas possible :)

He played several new tracks from the album last night in NYC. I had never heard these before, he said they were totally unreleased and many were the first time played live. The album will not be out for another month! He was backed by a full orchestra on most, with Sam Amidon & Nico Muhly collaborating. Great show! But I want the new album!
