Douglas Firs is Gertjan Van Hellemont (°1987), singer and songwriter with a preference for singersongwriters like Ryan Adams and James Taylor, the pop melodies of The Beatles, and the country blues of North Mississippi Allstars. He’s also crazy about Back To The Future. I, II and III. And he likes eating fruit. But back to the music. After a gig, people tell him they hear influences like Neil Young, Grant-Lee Phillips or Jackson Browne. Gertjan reacts surprised sometimes, because he didn’t necessarily mean it that way. But if people hear it, it must be true.
In high school, he played in several bands, and he participated in some music competitions. The highlight was a trip to a festival in Norway (to play some concerts). And back. With Douglas Firs, he sometimes plays solo, but he’s often accompanied by his brother Sem, or performing with a full band. Gertjan sings, plays the guitars, harmonica and lap steel.
