This is a perfect combination of 70s gospel, soul, and small combo jazz… Then song begins with a bluesy acoustic piano progression that is joined by Donny Hathaway’s gospel moaning and an electric piano. As the song progresses, a brass section joins to provide accent. The song progresses in this vein for a good two minutes before it becomes an instrumental in which the piano takes the lead. There the rhythm changes and acquires a stronger jazz combo feel in something like 6/8 time. If you want to get a sense of Donnie Hathaway’s versatility, this is the song to hear. In it, you get to hear him as songwriter, singer, arranger, and keyboardist in three different genres.
