  • Blue Monday v. Our Love

    17 Jul 2006, 18:42 by groupy

Both "Blue Monday" by New Order and "Our Love" by Donna Summer are great songs, but they have something major in common. The drum breaks are the EXACT SAME. Listen to them if you don't believe me. You might be thinking "damn you Donna Summer for stealing the awesomest drum pattern ever!". But "Our Love" came out four years before "Blue Monday". I doubt New Order actually stole it, of course, but if you listen to "Our Love," especially 1:30 into the song, it's totally uncanny.
  • The Gay Music Challenge

    12 Jul 2006, 14:21 by Flutey

Well, we're into day 3 of the Gay Music Challenge (part 1 - the prelude), and I have to say that it's been a fun ride so far. What's it all about? Well, it all started one day whilst chatting to my friendlies that I suddenly noticed that they were my top Neighbour! Woohoo! But wait, clearly because we were sharing music and trying stuff out, we had suddenly influenced who our neighbours were. Could this be taken further?

So the idea of manually manipulating our neighbours came into being. And what more fun way than to pick a segment of society and trying to pinpoint them through musical preference. And so, the Gay Music Challenge was born.

It's a reasonably fuzzy area defining who are Gay Artists. Is that artists who are open about their sexuality such as Michael Stipe, Rufus Wainright, Bob Mould, Morrissey (ambigious), Stephin Merritt, but who don't produce particularly "gay" music? Or are we talking about artists with a large gay following irrespective of their sexual orientation. …

  • June 2nd: On this Day

    2 Jun 2006, 09:54 by tenderbranson69

2005, Franz Ferdinand 's frontman, Alex Kapranos , was detained by Russian police after being suspected of being a spy. Kapranos was attempting to board a plane in Moscow when the altercation took place. Travelling under his actual surname, Huntley, Alex was accused of being an MI6 agent who was previously suspected of stealing information on Russian weaponry. Unlucky for Alex that the surname Huntley was also used by actual former MI6 agent Richard Tomlinson who did steal secrets in the early 90s. The singer was freed after he pointed out that the Huntley they were so concerned about was 42, 13 years older than him.

2003, A painting of Kylie Minogue wearing gold hot pants caused tempers to fray among drivers in Brighton. Artist Simon Etheridge, put up the almost life-size picture in his own Art Asylum gallery, as part of a Festival and since then motorists had caused regular traffic hold-ups as they stopped to take a second look.
