The track started airing on the radio on March 24, 2008 and was released through digital download on the iTunes Store and Amazon.com on March 25. According to guitarist Dan Donegan, “It’s about a girl he was in a relationship with. She committed suicide, and he just has the voice of the devil over his shoulder trying to provoke him to take his own life to join her again, because the only chance for him to be with her again is if he takes his life. We’re not condoning suicide off of this, it’s just more of the temptation to join a girlfriend that was very confused and messed up and wanted out.”
When asked by a fan during the DeepRockDrive Concert, if Devin was really his girlfriend, Draiman replied: “That wasn’t actually her real name, in “Inside the Fire”, a lot of people have asked what that’s about. It is actually, unfortunately about a true incident of suicide that happened when I was a young kid, about 14, 15 years old. I had a girl who was a heroin addict and, on the wrong path and got obsessive compulsive, became way too attached and wanted to tell my parents about our relationship that I wasn’t allowed to have, I was going to a religious boarding school at the time, and I wasn’t even allowed to talk to a girl, let alone date a girl.

Ooh, Devon, won't go to heaven
She's just another lost soul about to be mine again
Leave her, we will receive her
It is beyond your control, will you ever meet again
