Dire Straits was the first material he released, brought out in 1978, when punk was at the forefront(mentioned a billion times already), and it is truly just a set of great songs.
It starts out with the atmospheric Down to the Waterline, which tells the story of a young couple going down to their favourite hideout. I get the feeling this one's autobiographical, because it just seems so true to life. It begins with quiet sounds of boats and snippets of lead guitar, before the band kicks in for maximum effect.
Water of Love follows this and is a really original, inventive track, the way Knopfler uses slide guitar and clever metaphors to make you feel like you are actually in a desert. And Pick Withers inventive percussion and drum playing only help this further. Great song.
