About this album

Master of the Moon is Dio’s tenth and final studio album. It was released on September 7, 2004 in America through Sanctuary Records and August 30, 2004 in Europe through SPV Records.

Master of the Moon marks the return of guitarist Craig Goldy, who also performed on Dio’s Dream Evil (1987) and Magica (2000). It also features Jeff Pilson on bass, Simon Wright on drums, and Scott Warren on keyboards, although according to some, Dio and Goldy handled all keyboard duties on the album (Scott Warren is listed in the credits for the album).

One song, “Death by Love,” was partly written by former Magica touring bassist Chuck Garric.

There are no writing credits provided in the album’s liner notes. Ronnie James Dio produced this album.

I've tried getting into this one for years but I just can't seem to do that. No disrespect on behalf of Simon Wright, but after Vinny Appice's jammy drumming style I find the drumming here very stiff and uninspired. I don't know what happened to Craig Coldy after "Dream Evil" either... His riffing just got stiff, flat and boring as well. Dio's vocals and melodies still sound great as always, but the music is just lacking. Not a bad album, though. Just not what I'd call essential Dio.

On this album the guitars take a backseat, bringing the keyboards more upfront together with Dio's vocals. Because of that, I think this is one of the most atmospheric and solo-sounding albums he ever did. Another killer!

The guitars need turning up. That's what stops this from being a great Dio album.

It's a fantastic album. "The Man Who Would Be King" is the only weak link. Otherwise, it was his best since Dream Evil and a fitting final album for the DIO band.

Amazing album, Dio is the king! VERY great vocals and guitarplaying founds in this one. Favourite song is track number five! This is in my opinion DIO's fourth great album. Only Vivian Campbell era are better.
