Underrated as hell. Probably the most "arranged" album by Dinosaur Jr. Every track has a special feel/instrumentation.

How has no one mentioned the cover art? Its almost endearing in its complete terribleness.

Ok, ok, ok: It's undeerrated, it's indeed very good. But best album? The favorite album? Come on!

@TwoFingers - you are probably mistaken. Maybe you heard a live version is 1997. The flute part was always played on a mellotron

so underrated that they don't even have the right track list. Alone is my favorite and they don't have it :(

actually there are more than 4 tracks on the album - I don't know what's up with last fm on that - also, I don't really like the 2007 remaster of this because he changed the instrumentation around a bit and now I can't find the original 'never bought it' WITHOUT the flute. Originally that melody was played by J's guitar. There was a 2004 live acoustic version w/ just J and a chick on flute that was good enough - I just don't think he should have changed the studio album 10 years later.

way underloved... this album feels like the essence of sadness and helplessness presented in the subtlest possible way. The wailing guitars in "Alone" are the closest thing to yelling "I'm sad!" one will find on here... the rest is calmer, yet no less emotional. There's a lot of quality tunes here - the opening cut showcasing that the record is no "Without a Sound", and managing to do so with the first syncopated guitar riff; the hooky flute of "Never Bought It"; the painfully bittersweet and irresistible "Sure Not Over You"... and last but not least the epic "Alone". This is a magical record that is often neglected, I consider it a gem. Try it out...

Yeah it is underrated, everyone seems to be like 'oh they let us down with this one' how? It may not be as good as YLAOM but listen to Nothin's Goin On and tell me that's not an amazing tune.
