Biography

Baltimore, Maryland (1990s – present)

Diana Lee Froley (born 18 August 1969) is an American and . Based in Baltimore, Maryland, she is known for her distinctive voice, bearing a noticeable likeness to Courtney Love, and the , off-kilter eclecticism of her music. Her often autobiographical lyrical subject matter includes tales of destructive love, crime and destitution, and candy bars.

Born two days before the conclusion of The Beatles’ recording sessions for Abbey Road, Diana Froley would in her song “Keen 13” lament that she was “born too late.” In the mid-1990s, Diana Froley formed the Baltimore-based label Serious Records. The first release on Serious was Froley’s debut album, You’re Not Broke But I’m Going to Fix You, a collection of stark, hostile songs with an analogous, experimental musical approach.

Other artists whose recordings were released on Serious included Tom Owen, Little Gruntpack and The Tinklers. Her three-piece band “The Diana Froley 3”, including Rupert Wondolowski of Little Gruntpack, released the album Lauraville in 2001. Lauraville was decidedly more listener-friendly than Froley’s earlier material, being mostly , even including a cover of Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Get You Off of My Mind”.
