About this album

Physicist took several years to come to fruition. Townsend had previously played with Metallica’s then-bassist Jason Newsted, in a short-lived thrash metal project called IR8. After the creation of an IR8 demo tape, Townsend and Jason Newsted began work on a new project called Fizzicist, which they claimed would be “heavier than Strapping Young Lad”. When the IR8 tape was leaked, Newsted’s Metallica bandmates James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich learned of the project. Hetfield was “fucking pissed” that Newsted was playing outside the band, and Newsted was prevented by his bandmates from working on any more side projects.

Unable to continue working with Newsted, Townsend instead wrote the album himself, entitling it Physicist. Townsend assembled his bandmates from his extreme metal side project Strapping Young Lad. This was the only time this lineup was featured on one of Townsend’s solo albums.

Wow, this is awesome...I didn't think I'd hear an industrial metal style album by Devin that'd hook me, but this is awesome!

I don't like that strange mastering, coz audio levels are so different at some moments that I can't hear Devin's vocal clearly or few other instrumental parts. Besides that it's a really good album and I'm really curious how it would sound with Jason Newsted as it was planned.

Wow, even when reading about a Devin Townsend album you learn that the guys from Metallica are assholes. [3]

I'm starting to feel like this album is really underrated. I used to not care for it that much but it was like something just clicked a little while ago. It's very SYL like though and I've just recently started enjoying the SYL albums more so maybe that extended into increasing my enjoyment of this.

"Namaste" pulls me into this universe and the rest of the songs keep me there. This album has really unique production, unlike anything I've ever heard. And the zany "Forgotten" somehow works as the bowtie to seal up this album. By that point I usually want to hear "Namaste" again and end up listening to the whole album a second time.

The only thing I hate about the production in this album is it's hard to hear Devin's voice, even with headphones/earbuds.

I actually love the production. [2] Tho not a fan of the sound of the vocals.

I always come back to this album. He's done a lot of stuff now and nothing tops this for just being great music. I hope Kingdom being redone on the Epicloud album brings people to find this one.

I love this album; more than anything else he's done, this is like "Positive Metal."

Don't get why Dev doesn't like this album too much, but I'm hearing it as a fan and not the artist obviously. This was the first Dev stuff I ever heard, & still great to me. Production sounds fine. A little variety isn't bad.

@Tricksterc you're actually wrong. Physicist was a project with Jason Newsted (back when he was in Metallica), but being the assholes that Metallica is they made him quit the project. Devin then just recorded it with gene Hoglan.

Production is what makes this album, it's unique, slighlty tinny in places but it suits the feel of the songs perfectly. Underrated album, I prefer it to every Devin solo album that followed except perhaps Addicted, but that's different music all together.

was originally supposed to be a SYL album. Devin changed his mind, same lineup as Strapping though. Bizarre tuning gives it that unique sound.

Totally underapprciated Devin album. I remember getting it and having no idea what to expect. These were the days when you had to order stuff straight from Dev. I was blown away. Material is still one of my favorite songs ever, and Kingdom ain't far behind.
