Biography

Derek Grant (born April 24, 1977) is the current drummer and backing vocalist for punk band Alkaline Trio, where he replaced Mike Felumlee. He has previously been a member of The Suicide Machines, Telegraph, Gyga, Thoughts of Ionesco, Remainder, Walls of Jericho, and Broken Spoke, a side band with Royce Nunley and Jay Navarro. Besides playing the drums, Grant is an accomplished guitarist and singer, and briefly toured with Face to Face as the bands guitarist. In addition, he frequently joins bassist Dan Andriano and guitarist Matt Skiba on vocals and also with songwriting duties. After Alkaline Trio went through a series of drummers in the early days and first 3 full length albums, Matt Skiba recently said that “If Derek was not in Alkaline Trio then there would be no trio”. It appears now that Derek is here to stay and the line of drummers is now over.

He also used to fill in for Josh Freese and has played for him on many The Vandals Tours up until 2004, when he took the same role with Good Charlotte during the later half of that year.

According to a chat with fans in May 2005 on the BBC Radio One website, Derek is working on a side project with Hunter Burgan of AFI. It’s apparently an electronic side project. Whether this means that Derek will help on Hunter Revenge is yet to be known. Derek and Hunter have only talked briefly about this side project and so far none of it has actually been written or recorded.

Derek married his long-term fiancee Theresa Stanton on Halloween 2005. He currently resides in Indianapolis.
