Der Blutharsch (“snow drenched in blood”, “dried blood” or “scab”) is the primary musical project of Austrian musician Albin Julius. Der Blutharsch uses heavily layered and textured neoclassical and martial themes which usually unfold over the course of a whole album. Individual tracks are almost always untitled.
Julius co-founded The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud along with his then-partner Alzbeth. This project produced more neofolk-based music, based around themes drawn from European history and folklore. Julius has also worked with Douglas P. on the Death in June albums Operation Hummingbird and Take Care & Control, and with Boyd Rice on the NON album Children of the Black Sun. He was also together with Douglas P. part of Boyd Rice and Fiends and has a techno-style project named La Maison Moderne.

With the release of "Time Is Thee Enemy!" in 2003, Julius took Der Blutharsch into the direction of a rock band. Gone were the martial aspects of Der Blutharsch, only apparent to some extent in promotional imagery. Instead of a one-man project, promotional material showcased the project as a fleshed out group. Live shows continued in this direction with a focus on placing the group further into the area of psychedelic rock. Subsequently, any traces of the previous focus on historical themes disappeared with new promotional imagery showcasing drug references, such as psilocybin mushrooms. Here is a clip that was shot by the Czech TV news channel at the Nova Alternativa festival on October 2nd 2009 at the Exit Chmelnice Music Club in Prague. The line-up was the following: Bain Wolfkind, Deutsch Nepal and Der Blutharsch.

Early Der Blutharsch recorded material was very dark ambient in sound, heavy on historic samples and post-industrial melodic drones. Add to this his additional use of military-related themes and aesthetics, including Third Reich-era material, in the composition of his works. Despite these accusations Der Blutharsch released worked with such bands as the anarchist left-wing band Terroritmo from Italy.
