About this album

Speak & Spell is the debut album from the British synthpop group Depeche Mode, recorded and released in 1981. The album peaked at #10 in the UK Albums Chart.

This was the only Depeche Mode album with Vince Clarke as a member of the band. Clarke wrote most of the songs for the band, before departing to form the synthpop duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet.

The album is significantly lighter in tone and melody than their later work, a direction which can largely be attributed to Clarke’s writing. After he left, Martin Gore would take over songwriting duties, writing almost all of the band’s material. Later albums written by him would explore darker subjects and melodies.
The album title alludes to the then-popular “Speak & Spell” electronic toy.

When interviewed by Simon Amstell for Channel 4’s Popworld programme in 2005, Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher both stated that the track “What’s Your Name?” was their least favourite Depeche Mode song of all time.

it has hold up pretty well compared to some of their other albums (ie some great reward, black celebration). Mostly cause its pure analogue sound and percussion.

Have to say this is superb and so upbeat. Lovely zippy melodies and basslines. It may not be the best DM album, but is so catchy and fun and instantly makes you happy. Thank you Vince Clarke for DM Part 1. I have to say I hated this album when I first heard it, but I love it now in a cheesy way - it's of its time, but if we didn't have this, then who knows if we'd have had DM or not?

THANKS GOD VINCE CLARK LEFT THE BAND <- With hand on heart I must admit I'm glad too. Not that I don't like these first songs but I think if Vince have stayed in the band, Depeche Mode wouldn't become what they are today. It's in a great deal thanks to Martin that they withstood the test of time and - it's amazing to see that the band which has been existing for over 30 years now is still developing.
