About this album

Sounds of the Universe is the twelfth full-length album by Depeche Mode, released in Europe on 20 April, 2009, and on 21 April, 2009, in the US and Canada. It’s supported by the ongoing Tour of the Universe. The album contains 13 tracks.

As with the previous album, Playing the Angel, Dave Gahan has once again written three songs with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott: “Hole to Feed”, “Come Back” and “Miles Away / The Truth Is”. “Spacewalker” and the bonus track “Esque” are instrumentals. Martin Gore shares lead singing duties with Gahan on “In Chains”, “Peace” and “Little Soul”, he sings the lead of “Jezebel” and the probable B-side “The Sun and the Moon and the Stars” on the second disc of the Deluxe Box Set. The B-side “Oh Well” is the first track ever to be co-written by Gore and Gahan. The album ends with a short hidden instrumental track after “Corrupt”.

I loved this album straight away!

I expected this would be a controversial album just from how experimental it is for them...a few tracks in, the guitar is as expressive as it was during Songs of Faith and Devotion, which is always welcome to me!

It could be the one of the best DM's albums. Songs are truly awesome but arrangements're mostly weak. If only Alan or Flood had produced it..

I really do not get the hate. This is probably my favorite DM album.

Listening to Delta Machine made me understand how much I love the "experimental" side of Depeche Mode. I frankly hope they're not quitting it.

it had to grow on me for four years until I started to like it. Now I would rate it 8/10 but Peace is still one of their worst songs. It kills the album.

Only looking at the actual album it's the worst thing they ever released. Some great tracks on disc 2 and some really good demos on CD 3.

Keeping bonus tracks in mind I find this album a lot better than PTA. Just bought boxset and that was probably one of the best music purchases I've ever made.

This album still holds a high place for me as one of their best albums. Very modern sounding and every song hits home with me. Even the b-sides are on the same level and bring in something familiar while having great impact such as Ghost, Light and Oh Well. Fragile Tension, Corrupt and Hole To Feed are easily among my all time favorite songs from them. You even have another Martin sung classic "Jezebel" that has an everlasting impression. Even the two instrumentals are creative and fun. There isn't a dull moment on this masterpiece for me, I can't seem to praise it enough. Writing is overall impressive and has many memorable lines. This shows Depeche Mode is on top of their game as much as they were in the 80's.
