I'd forgotten and stopped listening to this album because of the awful mastering. That is, until I found the wonderful SACD version! You can find it too, in certain russian 'tracking website' :P (or PM me)
There's a lot of talk about how Depeche Mode are a "dark" synthpop band, but this is the only album where they went well and truly dark IMO. Brilliant album, and I don't even mind that it's mastered so loud and harsh, it fits the music.
I have copy protected cd of this album, and even when I tried my hardest could not remove some artifacts and clicks when I ripped. I used many methods and I just could remove some of them using EAC. Does anyone know how to remove all of them?? When I want to listen to this I have to play it on my CD player and just two songs are included in "The best of" compilation. I really love this album and I hate I can't enjoy it properly in my computer and my cell phone.
The vinyl brings out the emotion through the dynamics, so after hearing that, I can say this is easily among Depeche Mode's best work. So dark, haunting and has some of their heaviest moments. Simply gorgeous...
Pretty much their best album without Alan (tied with Ultra), each song is great with amazing atmosphere, lyrics and melodies. Suffer Well, Precious, I want it all, Nothing's Impossible and Damaged People are masterpieces
This is the best album in the world, if you ask me. I could listen to it forever! I love EVERY SINGLE SONG on it, and that happens never to me. I can't even describe how deeply it touches my emotions... the outstanding lyrics, so many layers in music, emotion... masterpiece!!
I like a fair few songs on this album, Lilian, Precious, John the revelator, but there also to many bleeps. The mastering on the CD is so bad I had to bring it back (the only CD I ever did that). The CopyControl absolutely freaked out my NAD set. It sounded better through the computer Cd-drive.........
Favourite! Remember when I heard this for the first time - very first record of DM - and I totally get into. Yes, all the albums are good/better/perfect, but this is gripping, melodic and electro based. Better than Violator for me.
Depeche Mode has changed a lot since the early days of Speak and Spell. This album wasn't quite as dark as some of the other albums like Songs of Faith and Devotion. But definitely an improvement. I've been a fan since I was 12 and have every album and 5 of the box sets.
