About this album

Deep Purple is the third album by the band of the same name, recorded and released in 1969. The album is notable for featuring the longest track in the band’s history - a 12-minute “April”. It was also different from the band’s first two releases in that it included almost entirely original material, the only cover being “Lalena”, originally recorded by Donovan Leitch.

This release saw the band heading into more progressive and hard rock direction, which was further developed on the next albums.

The album reached only #162 in the Billboard charts. The single, “Bird Has Flown” didn’t impress the audience either. Shortly after the album was released in the US, and even before the UK audience could buy it, Rod Evans and Nick Simper were both fired when their limitations became evident to the other members.

In 2000, the CD was re-issued along with extensive liner notes and 5 bonus tracks.

It was the last album to feature the so-called Mark I of Deep Purple, that included:

Rod Evans - vocals
Ritchie Blackmore - guitar
Nick Simper - bass guitar, backing vocals
Jon Lord - Hammond organs, keyboard, backing vocals
Ian Paice - drums

Супер альбом. Абложка картины "чистилище" не особо передает дух альбома) больше подходит для каких нибудь дэз метал групп) имхо. Но сам альбом великолепен, лучший от первого состава группы

As mugshot_tim said, the track listing is wrong. The second chunk of 1-9 should be on the Battle Rages On album.

I didn't like this album in the past, but now I have to say it is really good. Chasing Shadows, and Why Didn't Rosemary are my favourite in here.

Growing up in the 70's it was this album and "Shades Of" then "Machine Head" that I got turned on to. I'm finally able to check out "In Rock" after all these years. It's been a long trip to get back to them.

Many people claim that the classic sound of Deep Purple started with In Rock. I think this album is when their true style was created. Though of course is not as good as the following records.

I bought this a long time ago (on cassette in a discount bin of all things) because I loved the Deep Purple of Smoke On The Water and that is all I really knew about them. It turned out to be one of my favorite albums ever.
