Biography

San Francisco, United States (2010 – present)

Based out of San Francisco, CA, Deafheaven started as an isolated project between frontman George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. After sending the demo to various blogs and receiving overwhelmingly positive reception, they accepted offers to play live shows and added members to form the quintet that today tours as Deafheaven. On July 29th, 2010, Deafheaven played their first show, marking the unofficial genesis of their rise to bay area prominence. Within months of forming, they began receiving interest from numerous record labels and officially signed on with Deathwish Records in December of 2010.

Since signing to Deathwish, Deafheaven has released a limited edition 7” demo, debuted their first full album, Roads to Judah, toured the West Coast; and are currently preparing for a tour of the South West.

Their music is described as “A dizzying hybrid of shimmer, passion, vulnerability, and intensity.” They have cited a wide range of musical influences, including, but not limited to, Morbid Angel, The Smiths, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Orchid and My Bloody Valentine.

Agreed. A bit of a paradox, but perfect for a feel-good summer jam. Album title ironically applicable.

I love how uplifting it is for a bm influenced record.

Is Sunbather a flawless album? Nope. Is it better than most 2013 releases? So far, I'd say so. I'm hardly a fanboy, but my expectations were pretty high... and so far, I think it's delivered. My initial impressions are comparable to my first RTJ plays: it's good, but it'll take time to truly sink in and shine. There are a lot of layers to sift through and discover, in my opinion, and I only see the tracks getting better and better with each play. For that reason alone I'm not going to praise or critique the album just yet. But considering how much more polished it is than Judah, I can only see it becoming a 2013-favorite.

And for what it's worth, the album's runtime is an hour. Divided by seven, that's 8.57 minutes per track on average. Judah is about 38 minutes. Divided by four, that's 9.56 minutes per track. Even with the shorter interlude tracks factored in, ~8:30 tracks are negligibly shorter than ~9:30 tracks in the grand scheme of things. "Yeah man, I really wish all those Sunbather songs would push nine minutes instead of ten, derp." // You're correct about the album not being on the same level of RTJ: it's a huge step above it, and anyone can tell you that. The drumming and production alone are leaps and bounds ahead. And for a band that's meshing a lot of sounds and influences together, I think your "pandering to a certain crowd" statement is also incorrect. Come at me bro.

new one absolutely destroys Judah, and I loved that album.

Haha, I merely pointed out that the actual "tracks" are lengthier, despite your initial statement. I didn't question your intelligence, despite being wrong. But if you're going to become irrationally irate, you can go right ahead and fuck off.

    @ mattleo_: well not really. Judah's track times are: 12:19, 6:49, 9:32, and 9:46. Sunbather's are 9:15, 10:17, 14:37, and 11:27... with interludes between each.

it feels more forced than roads to judah and the shorter track lengths are indicative of this. still one of my favorite 2013 releases.

I think they're actually going out of their way to NOT pander to anyone, and just make the record they wanted to. It could use a little pandering, honestly.

agreed, it's definitely pandering to a certain crowd...

i'm listening since i've read nothing but good things...BUT, it sounds like indie rock 'black metalfied'. if that makes any sense. i dunno it's just not doing it for me.

it's definitely not on the same level as roads to judah.

I never thought I would say this, but Sunbather is actually pretty good.

This is certainly good, but after Teethed Glory and Injury, I'm having a hard time listening to more standard bm/post-rock like this.

I'm with Deathorse: I can't stand the slobby post-rock arpeggios and stuff; but the triumphant elements, like @ 8.24 in Vertigo, are strong. ironically, the best parts are the blackened ones, lol.

@Deathorse The climactic passages have always sounded false for me, much in the way they do in many screamo and post-metal bands.

@DonCappuccino : Thanks, I actually thought that was just an extract from some obscure film or something, haha. Bordering on heresy to have Neige guest on your album only to provide a spoken word part in which his voice is obscured behind a fog of noise.Maybe the emo/hipster lyrics get a veneer of sophistication when spoken in a gentle French accent, who knows.
