Motown Records, also known as Tamla-Motown outside of the United States, is a record label originally based out of Detroit, Michigan ("Motor City"), where it achieved widespread international success. Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music as the first record label owned by an African American and primarily featuring African American artists to regularly achieve crossover success and have a widespread, lasting effect on the music industry.
Incorporated on 12 January 1959 by Berry Gordy, Jr. as Tamla Records, Motown has, over the course of its history, owned or distributed releases from more than 45 subsidiaries in varying genres, although it is most famous for its releases in the musical genres of R&B, hip hop, pop, and soul. Motown left Detroit for Los Angeles in 1972, and remained an independent company until 1988, when Gordy sold the company to MCA. …
1 Feb 2007, 06:30 by PulchritudinousSo, I go to add a tag to an awesome band... (in particular Dazz Band). I see tags used like "shit only a fag would listen to" and "shit only a retard would listen to" and "music to suck cock to". Seriously, what is going on?? Temporarily overlooking the horrible language and offensive words in that tag, what is so wrong with Dazz Band?? It's too funky!
Shame on you whoever made up tags like that! I know other artists have tags like this, and it's just so childish and stupid it's not even funny. Anyone that knows me, knows my taste in music, and Dazz Band is totally my style (love that funk) - so does that make me a "fag" and "retarded" and a cock sucker?? Please, someone let me know if this is the case, maybe I'm just a douchebag and don't know it.
2 Dec 2006, 17:25 by beelzbubbaI recently traded recommendations with qss. Joaquim has hooked me up with Jan Jelinek, who takes bits and pieces of old funk-fusion-jazz and mixes them with beats for some nice new chill and downtempo sound explorations; he also introduced me to Bengt Berger--for which I am an will be eternally grateful. Berger's music is, how you say, right up my alley. Hell, it's in the alley, up the steps, and right into the living room.
So Joaquim asked me to return the recommendation. I'm not quite sure I lived up to the obligation, because I have been in a deep funk mood lately (the music not the psychological kind) and so my cd player has been filled with the likes of Black Merda, PHARAOHS, Baby Huey and the baby sitters, Curtis Mayfield, the Mar-Kays, and the Bar-Kays. I want the bomb, I want the pre-funk, I wants to get funked up. Make my funk the pre-funk, don't want my funk stepped on. Apologies to George Clinton.
I was listening to Black Merda when I got Joaquim's request. …
13 Sep 2006, 06:26 by AdriaNnLAFor those of us in or near the Ark-La-Tex there's an annual event fast approaching which we all look forward to.
The advent of the Red River Revel (official site) brings with it not only a cornucopia of fun food, eclectic art and a mix of marvoulous musical talent; but also the beginning of a respite from the arduous heatwave that is summer in Louisiana.
Diversity of experience is a lot of what the yearly Revels are all about.
There's artist galore bringing their craft from all points far and wide. The culinary offerings cover the gamut of taste and cultural roots, leaving little to be desired.
What ties it all together though and makes it a Revel, is the music.
This year's lineup consist of:
