  • + BEST IN HEAVY METAL - 2012 +

    2 Apr 2014, 11:53 by Coffinwood_Mill

    Hi folks,

The years have come and gone, and yet for some odd reason I still receive requests for my 'Best Of' journal entries in Heavy Metal, as well as several other genres. Why I still receive these requests I have no idea, but I've relented on being an e-seclusionist curmudgeon and eternally lazy long enough to post my Best in Heavy Metal of 2012 list. I hope whatever poor soul or bored last.fm troll that reads this dated meandering of metal finds something that they haven't otherwise heard or thought to listen to since '12. Unlike the previous journal entry, many if not most of the reviews here are sourced from other writers, webzines, and various publications as noted at the bottom of the review. Also, I encourage any suggestions for albums released in 2012 that I've omitted as it's painfully obvious from my list that I can't possibly listen to everything out there.

  • the top 40 rekkids of 2012 (I'm so late)

    31 Jan 2013, 03:31 by KMFCM

The top 40 rekkids of 2012 (the worst fucking year ever)
I told you this year would suck.
I told you everyone would be hoping the world would in fact end.
It didn’t though (but My Bloody Valentine might still bring about the end of the world next year, ha ha ha)
….not only that, very few bands really delivered albums that captured the general feeling of wanting the world to end this year. You’ll see which. I’m a little surprised I ended up having more than 40 albums to put together. You had quite a few huge disappointments. . . . .you also had a couple of bands suddenly deciding to really try this year.
    Here they are. . .

    Here goes the list
    40. Noisear – Turbulent Resrgence
It getting on this list has nothing to do with whether or not they ended the album with a long ass noise track or not. It's just that good.

    39. Malignancy – Eugenics
it's rare that a tech death band can write shit so creazy, and still not just be an in-one-ear-out-the-other band. It sticks.

  • 2012 - a year in music

    19 Jan 2013, 17:51 by MATI9630

    Better late than never.

…or so they say? Well, it is kinda late, but then again, I was too greedy – wanted to rat—I mean, listen to so much music, hence the delay.

Note that my rating scale may (and probably will) differ from yours. Short summary:
    9 – amazing
8 – very good, recommended for everyone
7 – not bad, if you like the genre/band very much, you might give it a try…
6 – well, you CAN listen to it, but there’s no point. Boring/annoying for some reason. Not recommended (maybe if you’re a fanboy of the band – but in that case you’d already own the album)
Anything below 6 – no. Just no.

This or the Apocalypse – Dead Years // I’d rather have the Apocalypse…

All That Remains – A War You Can Not Win

As I Lay Dying – Awakened
    Ektomorf – Black Flag
Every Time I Die – Ex Lives

    Arthemis – We Fight
At Vance – Facing Your Enemy
Cradle of Filth – The Manticore and Other Horrors
Delain – We Are the Others
    DragonForce – The Power Within
    Eluveitie – Helvetios

    1. Grindcore|Death Metal

    Aeon - Aeons Black

    2. Melodic Death Metal

Be'lakor - Of Breath and Bone

  • 2012 summary, or THE journal you've all been waiting for!

    3 Jan 2013, 19:15 by Mrozikos667

So, yet another issue of the Year End Summary is about to amuse and bewilder you. It was an awesome year for music, and it was also a totally magnificent year for my other passion, cinema, but that's not the place to speak about it. Anyway, for quite some time I've had this thought that this summary business is kinda stupid – suddenly in December you realise how many potentially awesome albums you've missed and then you desperately try to make up for it by listening as much as you can, neglecting your work, studies, family, girlfriend, cat or whatever you've got to care for. Not that I intend to drop doing this or something, I guess I just like doing pointless stuff nobody cares about. Oh well, I start to blabber here. So, let's get ready to rumble!

This or the Apocalypse – Dead Years (The Worst Album of the Year and The Disappointment of the Year; it's actually really, really sad how this band managed to stoop so low after two great releases...)
  • Top metal albums of 2012

    1. KamelotSilverthorn
Didn’t expect Kamelot to sound that genuine after Roy Khan’s departure but Tommy fully delivered on several levels. Thankfully, the ‘new’ style is closer to what they did in the older days (welcome back, solos!) rather than the artificial sound on the last two efforts. All this, together with memorable melodies, breathtaking vocals and a haunting concept story, is more than enough to bring Youngblood’s brainchild back in the game and make Silverthorn its best output since the shadow of The Black Halo.

    2. FinsterforstRastlos
One of the very few albums of late that I can listen to from start to finish without an urge to skip a song or two. The line-up change led to a complete makeover and resulted in tightly produced moody epics which are surprisingly nowhere near being over the top. Despite taking notes from bands even a deaf person can distinguish, Rastlos is a damn worthy release in an overly-rehashed scene which rarely strikes me as exciting.

    3. MoonspellAlpha Noir
  • Doom Metal - The best of 2012.

    16 Dec 2012, 20:46 by funeraldoomer

This year brought us a lot of good extreme doom metal albums. However, there were fewer good traditional and epic doom albums. Here is my list :

    Evoken - Atra Mors
This is the best doom metal album of this year, in my opinion. And their best do far. Well balanced mix of bleakness and despair, dark/brutal and melodic/epic passages.

Inborn Suffering - Regression to Nothingness
Their sophomore release is much more mature than debut. Better song writing, better vocals, better production, much complex songs with many layers. Unfortunately this was their last since they disbanded recently. Shame, they were one of my favorite death/doom bands.

Daylight Dies - A Frail Becoming
The best melodic death/doom album of the year. Good as previous 2 albums, if not even better. Very melancholic, melodic and catchy!
  • you get a verdict, you get a verdict, EVERYBODY GETS A VERDICT!!

    Katatonia - Dead Ends Kings
    . . . . . what the hell, man?
I thought they were done being hit or miss. They are, now they are complete miss. The whole thing sounds like Night Is The New Day WAY watered down. The only song that's remotely interesting is "buildings", and that's because it sounds like "forsaker". What the fuck happened?

War from a Harlots Mouth - voyeur

It's crazy how far this band has come.
From machinegun breakdowns with actual machineguns because "hey why not?" to damn near non-stop obliterating heaviness and the kind of discordant riffs you expect from someone like Portal. This is a band known for throwing experimental bits into it's songs, and they still do that here, but instead of deviating from the overall mood of the album they add to it. Where the other albums would offer some respite with a jazzy interlude, here we get somber somewhat cinematic(did they call Bologna Violenta) cello interludes that to me make the album flow even better.
