(1977 – present)

David Knopfler (born 27 December 1952, Glasgow) is a British singer-songwriter, rhythm guitarist, pianist and co-founder (with older brother Mark Knopfler) of the critically-acclaimed rock band Dire Straits. After three years in Dire Straits (from 1977 to 1980), Knopfler embarked on a solo career as a recording artist, releasing a respectable number of albums over the years.

Knopfler played rhythm guitar and appeared on Dire Straits’ first two albums: 1978’s Dire Straits and 1979’s Communiqué. The stress of composing, arranging songs, recording the then-requisite two albums and tours to support them took its toll on the brothers, and Knopfler left the band during the recording of their third album, Making Movies, leaving him uncredited on the album.

Knopfler has been fortunate enough to reach a wide audience without compromising his art and while he’s enjoyed the respect and admiration of his musical peers, widespread critical acclaim, international awards and worldwide chart successes, has managed, in his own country, Britain, to keep a profile so low as to be nearly invisible. He lives quietly in the English countryside, notching up an impressive list of writing credits.

A regular panelist at music conventions, a once-married family man and lifelong member of organizations like Amnesty International and Adopt a Minefield, David has always made uncompromising life choices: “I don’t regard what I do as remotely glamorous.

he sounds extremely similar to Mark, but I actually prefer him as a solo artist. Mark's solo stuff always bored me for some reason.

Dire Straits is one of my favourite bands. Mark Knopfler is definetely a legend and one of the best guitarists in the world, but Dave Knopfler is one of the best composers. It is a pity that not too many people know his music. I attended a concert a couple of months ago and I was really astonished to realized that he had such a talent to make people feel great with his songs. There were 70 people at the most in the theater .It was such a lovely and magic night. When the concert was over we had the opportunity to talk to him about his albums and his music. He is such a nice person. I think that he enjoys being what he is, he didn´t want to be as famous as his brother, he just wanted to enjoy his music. And he did it. And I think it was a good decision. His album "Small mercies" , is one of the best albums I have ever heard, the music is beautiful ! Don´t miss it and enjoy it !!

That profile photo looks weird to me... I've only seen pictures of him in the liner notes of Commmuniqué and Dire Straits.

After long time of listening to Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits I start listening to David! It brings the great Roots Rock with really different taste than the other artists! Too bad I know him little too late! You are my new Favorite Artist!

David Knopfler to me is getting better and better! instead his brother Mark, that at the same time he becomes more talented guitarrist, becomes a boring composer... if the brothers were together, for sure we could have had Dire Straits for years... but egos are too strong in music business!

this is incredible! I always thought David just wasn't a good singer (because Mark always sings with dire straits). He is definitely underrated. It's interesting though, to see how two brothers who used to be in the same band differ so much in popularity. I suppose they have different ambitions...

I find each David's album since 1993 better than Dire Straits in terms of songwriting, and 2005's "The Ship Of Dreams" is a real masterpiece!

David and Mark really do sound alike. I like them both, but overall I like Mark's songs a tad better. But I guess it would be pretty hard to tell them apart if they would both sing the same song, so that really doesn't say alot about the sound of his voice.
