  • My favorite albums

    11 Apr 2008, 17:17 by Boomdeay

figured I'd list my favorite albums - I might have to edit this later, though because it's hard to think of these lists on the spot.
For me, a favorite album is one that I can listen to all the way through without skipping any tracks, and one that I've listened to a WHOLE HELL OF A LOT. They usually become car favorites for me.

    In no particular order:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III
The softer side of Zep! Since I've Been Loving You is one of the most amazing songs. Bron-Y-Aur Stomp is also a great one. That whole CD just moves me.

Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman
I have listened to this album probably 3847038473028473 times. Amazing. I kept this CD in my car on repeat the summer after I graduated from high school - I was usually the one driving when I went out with my friends, so it's near and dear to me and those friends I don't get to see very often anymore.

Mando Diao - Ode To Ochrasy
It rocks. Once again, this one got me through a few long car rides. It wasn't love at first listen, though. …

Step 1: Put music player on shuffle
Step 2: Post the first lines from the first 40 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 4: Bold out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING! (listening to the song you think it might be is ok though)

  • My Best and Worst Concerts of 2006

    19 Dec 2006, 18:20 by aathorp

Well, no more concerts until 2007. I wish we had awesome New Year's Eve concerts here. But since we don't, that leaves me to remember the best and worst concerts I saw this year.

    The Best

    1. David Gray - 08/08/06 at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa

Now for those that know me well, this probably isn't a surprise for the number one spot. I'd been dying to see David Gray for years... since I'd first heard White White Ladder in 2002.

David and his band played a mix of old and new material, though it was a little heavy on Life In Slow Motion songs for my liking. We were treated to an awesome solo My Flame Turns Blue and a great rendition of Sail Away. David seemed tired - his voice was a little rough around the edges. But I didn't complain... I still have his setlist at home, waiting to be framed.

    2. Michael Franti & Spearhead - 07/09/06 at CiscoSystems Bluesfest Main Stage, Ottawa

A perennial favourite at Ottawa's premiere festival, Michael Franti & Spearhead didn't disappoint. …

  • David Gray 08/08/06 at the NAC - Ottawa, ON

Last night we went to see David Gray. I've been doing a countdown for over two weeks. I had to sell my tickets to his shows in Toronto last year (yes, both of them). We had great seats - front row, centre stage. Ticketmaster was kind to me for once!

The opener was Teresa Sokyrka - she placed 2nd in Canadian Idol a couple of years ago. She has an amazing voice and reminded me of Martina Sorbara and Jason Mraz (before the record label got to him!). She had a very powerful voice and excellent lyrics. I'd go see her again - she seemed a little nervous playing in front of the crowd. It didn't help that no one knew who she was... I had to check 4 websites before I found out who the opener was.

David came on with the band... and I was lucky enough to get his setlist after the show. By far one of the best shows I've seen in a long, long time. The passion and energy he had was amazing... the songs were great live. I also got to hear one of my all time favourites - Sail Away off White Ladder. …

  • David Gray Live

Went to the extra concert here in Oslo. I've been a fan for years, and this is the first time he came to Norway, so it's a really big deal to me. And as I'm really tiny, a guy let me stand in the first row. Ah, magical..

The first thing David Gray said, was that he had seen a moose, and it probably wasn't a big deal to us, but it was for him, and after that he renamed all his songs to This Years Moose (This Years Love), The One I Moose (The One I Love), Moose Away (Sail Away) and Friday I'm In Moose (Friday I'm In Love) and so on.

    Loved it!

    01. Yann Tiersen - 84
Okay, I admit it, I'm totally hooked...I have soundtracks from Good Bye Lenin! and Amelie...both are so good, very atmospheric and tres relaxing. Good for studying to...and I love the piano. Although having said that, I didn't realise I'd played 84 sonds by him.

    02. Evanescence - 31
They may be inferior to Nightwish (they're my poppy metal, I suppose), but their earlier stuff from Origin is really good, as is the Anywhere but Home live album.

    02. Nightwish - 31
Have been listening to Wishmaster quite a lot recently - it's such a good album. Oceanborn, Once and Century Child are always referred to if you're talking "Best Albums", but Wishmaster just rocks. 'Specially She Is My Sin and Two for Tragedy.

    04. Rufus Wainwright - 20
My favourite male solo artist. His songs have so much emotion in that I just tend to listen to all of them rather than a specific album....such rich work really makes me realise why I'm addicted to music.

    05. Leaves' Eyes - 15
