David Gordon Trio

The repertoire of the David Gordon Trio combines highly arranged material, much of which is original, with very free treatments of jazz standards. The ‘European’ quality of their approach to the music reflects the diverse origins of the band members. Their sound is instantly recognisable, the musicianship impeccable, but the element which communicates most strongly with the audience is the band’s sense of playfulness and fun.

The David Gordon Trio was formed in 1995 and has made several tours of the UK and Denmark, including concerts at the Copenhagen Jazzhouse. Saxophonist Andy Sheppard and singer Jacqui Dankworth have appeared as guests with the trio.

The trio consists of UK pianist David Gordon, Danish double bassist Ole Rasmussen and US-based drummer Paul Cavaciuti. Together, they have a readily identifiable sound, and their music combines accessibility and groove with cutting edge improvisation, reflecting the group’s diverse backgrounds.

The trio’s three CDs, Dozen A Day (1998), Undiminished (2000), Angel Feet (2002) all released on the ZahZah label, have received critical acclaim, and each record’s initial pressing sold out, Japan being the largest market. The players were described as ‘strong and inventive musicians’ JAZZWISE, and their music is ‘beautifully played and recorded’ MUSICIAN, and ‘thoughtful, intelligent, romantic’ CADENCE.
