Biography

David Ferrard is a Scottish American singer-songwriter who crosses the boundaries of folk and country music. His voice has been compared to Tim Buckley and his writing to Woody Guthrie and John Prine. His songs tell stories about his and others’ lives. An ability to get under the skin of different characters has won him songwriting competitions, and a unique performace style has made him one of the most popular local performers, selling out shows last summer at Edinburgh’s annual International Fringe Festival.

Early Days
Born in Edinburgh in 1978 to an American mother and a Scots-Italian father, David was used to spending his childhood in both Scotland and the States. Educated in Edinburgh he went on in his late teens to study languages at Oxford University after a gap year teaching in Morocco and studying French literature at the Sorbonne. He has widely travelled the world, living and working in France, Germany, Belgium, Morocco and Turkey. After Uni he went to work for the Quakers in Brussels where he worked closely with the European Parliament and other peace organisations. His commitment to social and political change was to influence his songwriting and organising in the years to come.

A late (musical) bloomer
It was only when David returned to Edinburgh in 2003 that he started to write songs and to take them out on the local open mic circuit. He was immediately recognized as a new voice on the scene and was widely booked for gigs. He got invited to play at festivals and local organisations, including political party socials and peace vigils, as well as further afield to gigs in Canada and the States.
