Johnny is a man and he's bigger than you
But his overheads are high and he looks straight through
When you ask him how the kids are

Johnny seems to be regretting decisions he made being a product of his upbringing ("could have had the cadillac" and "could have married Anne") and as a result, taking revenge out on his wife. There's such a personal story behind each individual who abuses, and the victim too.

Ennish, you are supposed to find it disturbing. That's the whole point.

I didn't like this song at first because of the themes of domestic violence (found it a bit disturbing), but I like how Johnny is going to be unhappy for the rest of his life because of the choice he made. Poor Johnny...LOL. Nicely-told, Mr. Bowie.

"so creepy how dead-eyed he sings this" That's the trick, when you sing it in that way it makes it more creepy.

I wish Marrianne Faithfull would sing Repetition with her Broken English tone of voice style! (2)

Does the Johnny in this have any relation to the one mentioned in "I'm Afraid of Americans"?

yes great track this is. That line "Anne with the blue silk blouse" is actually a reference to Eno's "Julie with her open blouse..." I wish Marrianne Faithfull would sing Repetition with her Broken English tone of voice style!

"Can't you even cook? What's the good of me working when you can't damn cook?" So sad song :( I feel angry feelings towards Johnny! Can you believe, I hate a person who only lives in a song? Great, powerful song.
