I think it's meant as a contrast to the utterly bleak Quicksand which is placed right before this, and while Hunky Dory appears to be his most personal album, a cover seems to be out of place, but maybe that's the point of including it.

Uhm, this was not written by Bowie as far as I know. It was written by Biff Rose and Paul Williams in 66 and later recorded by Tiny Tim, an incredibly funny artist with a marvellous voice in 68. Bowie did this cover in 71. :) Still a great cover!

Last.fm refers only to compilations for every Honky Dory song, kind of crime.

It seems so upbeat (and it is) but the lyrics and his style suggest it's meant ironically. The lyrics included (sic) next to the line "and of thoughts unkind"...

Bowie managed to bottle sunshine and put it into a song. It can't get any happier than this. ^_^

I think this may of just become one of my favorite quotes "Just remember Lovers never lose 'Cause they are Free of thoughts un-pure And of thoughts unkind Gentleness clears the soul Love cleans the mind And makes it Free" ^_^ Now All I got's to do is find the sheet music then i'll be really happy
