The best version of the song is his, believe it or not:P. Concretely the one from "Bowie At The Beeb".

Prefer Scott Walker's version, but this is good too. No one of them beats Brel though.

Haunting, but a beautifully-sung story none-the-less. I love playing this one on the guitar. :)

Lyrics

In the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who sings
Of the dreams that he brings from the wide open sea
And in the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who sleeps
While the river bank weeps to the old willow tree
