The sound in Bowie's version seems like it's definitive Bowie (over the top key changes, etc.). The Doors interpretation of it showcased excellent work from Manzarek and gave it a bluesy saloon feel.

I love Bowie, but I much prefer the Doors' version. There's a creepiness to it that fits the song better IMO. This version is a little cartoony to me, especially around the "I tell you" parts (my sister says it sounds like the characters from the Nightmare Before Christmas are singing it). Bowie's part during the chorus gives me chills, though.
