“Heroes” is a song written by David Bowie and Brian Eno in 1977. Produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, it was released both as a single and as the title track of the album ”Heroes”. A product of Bowie’s fertile ‘Berlin’ period, life in the city was crystallized into a tale of two lovers who come together in the shadow of the ‘Wall of Shame’ (though here “the shame was on the other side”). David Bowie was inspired by seeing his producer Tony Visconti (who was married at the time) kissing his mistress across from the studio which happened to be next to the Berlin Wall - the lyrics were composed as an ironic commentary on the situation, with the quotes in the title meant to emphasise the irony. While not a huge hit at the time, the song has gone on to become one of Bowie’s signature tunes and is well known today for its appearance in numerous advertisements. It has been cited as Bowie’s second most covered song after Rebel Rebel. The single version of this song is far shorter than the album version.

According to the Heroes Songfacts, featured in this song are not only Brian Eno’s synthesizer and Robert Fripp’s guitar, but also producer Tony Visconti banging on a metal ashtray that was lying around the studio.

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day

I love LCD Soundsystem, but have you ever noticed how much of their sound was prefigured in this one song? Seriously, pretty much all their slower, less dance-y songs owe something to "Heroes".

By the way, is it just me who imagines the scene described in the song during a foggy, rainy afternoon? Maybe the gray album cover, or the official music video has something to do with it.

@peculiarmonster: While I agree with you to some extent, I can understand why some people find annoying the "I found the tunnel song!" thing. Instead of talking about the song itself, they rather use their shout here to say something that doesn't have anything to do with it. The problem is not how you found it, but why you don't talk about the song itself. It's ignoring what it really is and all of its artistic value. Well, it's just a shoutbox, anyway, so I don't expect a smart conversation analizing the lyrics or the message behind them, but it would be nice to read some appreciation (or good criticism) for Bowie's song. Maybe just a little comment ABOUT it. Just my humble opinion.
