Now is as good a time as any for a reissue (same goes for "Heroes" and Lodger of course). Zeit! was a wasted opportunity to repackage the trio properly (no extras? come on!). Would be nice to see Five Years or - better yet - Bowie Box Set replicated here
One of my absolute favorite Bowie albums. The songs on the first half are simply really well performed, catchy and awesome art rock songs and the instrumentals are absolutely gorgeous, "Warszawa" and "Subterraneans" in particular. This was so innovating and ahead of its time; perfect record.
This album is very strange. There's a huge disconnect between the silliness of the first part and the... holy-shit-this-is-gorgeous ending. Like a sudden mood swing without rhyme or reason. Not that the first part is bad, I love it, I'm just finding it hard to put the pieces together and see the full cohesive album. Maybe eventually I'll get it.
I think Bowie and Eno found the perfect equilibrium between the experimentation of krautrock bands and the melodic sensibilities of pop music that Bowie already knew pretty well. By the way, only David Bowie could make four epic albums in less than a year (The Idiot, Low, "Heroes" and Lust for Life).
