A high school friend and I used to pass CDs back and forth in an attempt to introduce the other to bands that we loved. "Before These Crowded Streets" was the first DMB album she presented to me, and this song is what jumped out at me on the first listen. It's still one of my absolute favorite DMB songs and I wouldn't be exaggerating to say that it's among my most beloved tunes in general.

This song, among many others, truly showcases Dave's songwriting genius and variety - this is past folk-rock and well into something much darker -- like an unholy mix of new age with classical music and a fast, macabre jazz. I can't quite describe it, but just when you have the song figured out, the chorus and finale turn it on its head with the most inspirational and beautiful melodies I have ever heard. Timeless, to say the least.
