France (1996 – 2009)

Dark Sanctuary is a band from France that was created in February 1996. Their songs can be categorized primarily as belonging to the “Dark Atmospheric” genre, most of them having a unique feel to them - mixtures between gothic, ethereal and tranquil, relying on classic instruments for the most part. Their first official release was a 20 min single track Mcd, ” Funeral Cry “, released in 1997 and, at that time, the band only consisted in two members,Arkdae on keyboards and Marquise Ermia on vocals.

In 1998, the band wanted to increase its strength by adding new members; another keyboards player, Hylgaryss, a percussionnist/bassist, Sombre Cÿr and a violinist, Eliane joined Dark Sanctuary. Together, they recorded the 1st album, ” Royaume Mélancolique ” and made their first concert in September 1998 near Paris.

In November 1999, they signed with Wounded Love Records and after the 2nd violinist Marguerite joined, they recorded their 2nd album, ” De Lumière et d’Obscurité “, which was released in November 2000.

But, right after their recording sessions, Marquise Ermia left the band to carry on her studies, and a new singer, Dame Pandora, thus joined Dark Sanctuary.

Their 3d album, ” L’Etre Las-l’envers du miroir ” was recorded in March 2002 and released at the beginning of 2003, few months after the release of a two-track single. This album, which has had a huge success in France and Germany, definitely established Dark Sanctuary as one of the greatest bands in this musical style.

Titled "Dark Sanctuary", this collaboration between the band and the Spanish drawer Victoria Francés is available as a 48 pages book inluding the cd, on Astiberri editions (ISBN: 978-84-92769-25-4). Check your local book store for more information. A cd only version will be available later on AvantGarde Music near the 15th January 2010. We are all very glad to see this project coming true, and hope this common work will please you as much as we are pleased to make it.

That final concert was a truly unique and emotional experience. A soaring performance from the band - more than happy I finally got to see them, so sad that it was their last. Dame Pandora's voice is truly angelic. Thanks to the organisers of the show and to everyone who turned up to see an extremely exquisite band. RIP

I share that sadness of their decision to split up, I only just found them and they disband. Well atleat I got to see them live, still in my memory from last night, something that will stay with me forever. But reading their explanations, it is good to see it is not completely evaporated, on the night of their last performance already there were side albums seperate performers from the band have done, and talk of for future releases. It really is something I will never forget, and what too many people missed, never even knowing of their existance.
