Biography
There are more than one band with the name DARK.
1) Dark was a British psychedelic rock band which released one album, “Round the Edges” in 1971.
2) Dark was a German/Serbian/Czech/American/Indian group who released two albums on the CMP label, the self-titled 1986 release and 1988’s Tamna Voda. The core of Mark Nauseef (percussion, keyboards) and Mark London Sims (bass electric guitar, percussion, keyboards) was augmented by Catherine Guard (vocals) on the first album, while a very different lineup and sound resulted from the addition of David Torn (electric guitar), L. Shankar (electric double violin), Leonice Shinneman (percussion, drums, keyboards) and frequent Nauseef collaborator Miroslav Tadić (electric guitar) on the second album. The music was highly experimental post-rock immediately derived from Nauseef’s poly-cultural percussion palette and experimentation with the synthesizer technology of the era, rooted in various threads of the 70s and 80s post-rock avant-garde (e.g. King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, tony william’s lifetime, Brand x), Sundanese gamelan, Hindustani and Carnatic music, among various other traditional and percussive musics, with a somewhat “dark” sound similar to groups like Univers Zero, Present and Shub-Niggurath. Very few traces remained of Nauseef’s earlier career phase in conventional rock music during the 70s, such as his stints in The Velvet Underground, Elf (with Ronnie James Dio), Ian Gillan Band, Thin Lizzy and G-Force, as by the mid 80s he had shifted his attention to more experimental and traditional music.
