Biography

Austria (1997 – present)

Dargaard was founded by Tharen (Abigor, Amestigon, ex-Heidenreich, Dominion III, Graumahd) in 1997 in Austria. The band was his opportunity to step away from his usual genre (Black Metal) and experiment with a different approach to express attitudes and feelings. With Elisabeth Toriser (ex-Abigor, ex-Antichrisis, Dominion III, Soulhunt, Graumahd), who took over the vocal responsibilties in 1998, Dargaard was able to successfully complete the recording of their debut CD, “Eternity Rites”, released by Napalm Records under the Draenor Productions banner in October 1998. August the following has Dargaard back in the studio. The follow up to “Eternity Rites” remains within Dargaard’s signature style and promise to prove once again their undeniable skill in creating superior melodies and atmosphere. “In Nomine Aeternitatis” was released on 06.03.2000. June 2001 welcomed Dargaard’s third recording effort, the “Dissolution of Eternity”. This CD has been described as having reached a milestone in innovative darkwave. Dargaard’s latest full length release, Rise and Fall, offers a magical sound experience characterized by impressive compositions. Atmospheric, enigmatic Dark Wave melodies embedded in bombastic choirs and orchestral arrangements are transformed into impressive works of art by the bewitching voice of Elizabeth Toriser. Follow Dargaard into their mystic and dismal world. “Rise and Fall” was released in March 2004 and was featured in various magazines as album of the month.

According to the 'recent listeners trend' above: Around 600 Dargaard listeners here in the last winter, but only around 350 on average, now in June. ;) Maybe because the day is longer ; and this is mainly night music. Sometimes, I think I am drifting in a cesspool of metal-alt-goth mediocre pile of sounds, only to discover diamonds like March Of Shadows. (Not even Top-15 here) I hope Tharen makes some new music in the future, no matter the name of the band.

Mostly a fan of metal, but when I'm in the mood for something more beautiful, I often choose Neoclassical Darkwave, and I must say, I'm beginning to conclude that this band is the class of that genre!

Neoclassical darkwave. xD Darkwave typically uses electronic beats.

Yes, these kinds of bands (Summoning as well) are on a big hiatus. Only the fans keep them alive. However, in most disbanbed metal-rock bands usually a reunion album happens. (from Celtic Frost, to Yes, to Accept, to Crimson Glory, Maiden with Dickinson, Priest/Halford etc.). And then a 'reunion' tour follows. I am not sure if this is the case in darkwave/ethereal, given there is less financial motivation for such a reunion, because of the limited commercial success in this genre. I mean, only Dead Can Dance used to enjoy some broader relative success outside the underground.

@LibreLibre It's all comes down to a matter of taste. If you don't like those (Amestigon, Dominion III), no one will force you to listen to them. There are plenty of underground bands to dig. You don't seem to like Industrial/EBM then that's probably you don't dig Dominion III, even though they have the same line-up with Dargaard. Besides, like I said, it's Tharen decision to continue with BM these days. He won't ask any fans if he doesn't ever want to do ethereal-darkwave stuff. No one will force him to. Especially when his band Dargaard didn't really enjoyed much commercial success.

@vacantwinterday "Crappy? Just because you don't like the BM genre? It's Tharen choice, and this deserves respect. "Sun of All Suns" by Amestigon is top-class BM. For me it's best not to have a new Dargaard album at all , rather have have a bad Dargaard. For all the impatient fans, just listen to the recent Dominion III albums by Tharen and Mrs Toriser, there are at least few similarities.
