Last night, it was well and truly time for many of us to literally “FACE THE MUSIC” as we tuned in to a brand new series of the UK’s biggest talent show. Gone are Cowell, Cole and Minogue and in their replace are three much younger, prettier things (well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad). And to be honest, that was the general gist of the entire episode. Here’s a quick recap in case you missed out.

Today, Britain’s most beloved Geordie was confirmed as one of the main judges on the US version of the X Factor alongside Simon Cowell and Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid. What does this mean? Well, firstly: it means that the British version of the show will now seemingly go ahead without its two main stars and the American will launch with a complete unknown judging the homegrown talent.
This is a very strange situation for the franchise to be in. Without Cole (and Cowell) the UK series could find it difficult to pull in the regular viewers. The career trajectory of winners like Joe McElderry has made it clear that most of the people watching the show do so for a combination of the media circus that surrounds it and sheer entertainment value. Arguably, since the signing of Dannii Minogue (and later, Cheryl) the X Factor has been more about the judges than the contestants.
