Biography

The Painted Bird concocts a mixture of Klezmer, radical Yiddish song, political cabaret and punk folk, kept together by Kahn’s amazing abilities as a songwriter, translator and performer; telling stories of outrageous incidents, poetically dark, tragically humorous and politically incorrect.

The Painted Bird has brought “Yiddish Punk Cabaret” to rock clubs, theatres, festivals and shtetls, from Berlin to Boston, Leningrad to Louisiana. The band has been called “The Yiddish Pogues,” and Kahn was once described as “someone between Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits - but yiddish. ” On tour premiering his new album of old and original songs in Yiddish, English, German, and Russian, “Lost Causes,” Daniel Kahn challenges the borders between radical & traditional, lyrical & political, east & west, folk & punk, mama loshn & loshn hora.

“If you take a bird and paint it all sorts of pretty colors, then release it into a flock of its own kind, the other birds will attack it in mid air until it falls from the sky, dead.”

These are the original lyrics to the song you are referring to "One, two, three, four, we are unemployed. We have not heard all month long, in the factory the hammer sound. Tools are cold, forgotten, the rust will eat them. Let's go around on the streets, and spend our time without work like the idle rich." Is Daniel Kahn literally "telling the poor to embrace unemployment and eat trash"? Or is it possible that there is some kind of broader context here? You could try googling Mordecai Gebirtig and Pete Seeger to get an idea of the ideas and traditions that are being connected in Daniel Kahn's rewrite. Also as a side issue, personally speaking I don't see dumpster diving as "eating trash". Reclaiming and sharing perfectly edible, packaged and in-date foodstuffs before they are either buried in vast tracts of landfill or incinerated seems to be the more rational approach to the "bury or burn edible food" alternative.

i like the music and all, but um... what is up with telling the poor to embrace unemployment and eat trash? i mean really? i suppose it would take a lit major to find that romantic rather than degrading...

The concert in Leipzig on Friday was fabulous. It's amazing that the Painted Bird hasn't become far more popular yet...

Sehr schöner Opener für Patti Smith in Berlin. Die Band hat es geschafft mit nur einer handvoll Liedern (fast) das ganze Publikum auf ihre Seite zu bekommen. Sehr sehr gute Band!!!
