Daniel Cohen began his NYC music career playing harmonica and guitar in Washington Square Park, mostly in folk jams but sometimes on his own or playing along with music in other genres. But after that first summer when the weather got too cold for a guitar to stay in tune, or for people to stay and listen, his ambitions turned to songwriting.
Having written songs before but not being entirely comfortable with their lyrics, lyrics became his main focus. Though always able to craft a melody as a blues harmonica player, the songs now originated from lyrical ideas. Writing a song every day and having plenty to choose from there is plenty of variety in his now hard hitting lyrics. And there are still plenty of hard hitting harmonica solos.
Influences range from Tom Petty and Bob Dylan to Woody Guthrie to mostly unknown blues men like Walter Horton and the spine chilling delta blues guitarist Fred McDowell.
He has graced the stages of such notable venues as the Bitter End, Kenny’s Castaways, the National Underground, Pianos, Googie’s Lounge at the Living Room and Arlene’s Grocery.
