• Musical Discoveries - July 2009

    I've decided that in order to procrastinate from the HSC, I'm going to make these little lists of music that I've discovered over the course of one month. Also, I'm going to limit it to 5 things, whether it be an album, artist, song etc.

    Here we go:

    1. Tom Waits
    Tom Waits is amazing. Before this month, I really had no interest in his music at all. I didn't like his hoarse, croaky voice, I thought he sounded strange. But for some strange reason, I checked out his music. I take that back, it was not a strange reason that led me to Tom Waits. In actuality, it was finding a reference to the album in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry, 2004), one of my favourite films ever. The reference was to his album Rain Dogs. This album is now one of my all time favourites. The evocative music, the sharp, funny, descriptive lyrics just drew me in and eventually I got to absolutely love his voice, it just sounds so dark and evil. …
