Biography

DJ Zhao brings contemporary and classic dance music together from all five continents, with focus on Africa. While his DJ sets reach from culture centers to remote areas of the globe, and from now back through the ages, DJ Zhao’s remix and mashup work directly connects “East” and “West”, acoustic and electronic, traditional and hyper-modern. Equal parts ethno-musicologist and booty shaker, Zhao is an ambassador of boom not only talking about, but demonstrating through raw sound experience, the underlying unity of all earth cultures and peoples. On a mission to destroy illusory borders of separation with blissful euphoria and ecstatic intensity, Dj Zhao’s ultimate aim, beyond creating unforgettable experiences on the dance-floor, is nothing less than to change our fragmented perception of the world, and fuse all lost strains and divided strands of the deeper-than-we-remember roots from which we all come.

Performing solo and as part of Ngoma Sound-system with Cuban Trumpeter El Congo (Tony Allen, Jimmy Tennor) and German Percussionist Robby Geerken (Los Van Van, Los Latinos), DJ Zhao brings unique perspectives and vision to every event, and has shared bills with artists such as Rhythm and Sound, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou (Benin), Pan Sonic (Finland), Cooly G (UK), Shackleton (UK), etc.

Born and Raised in Beijing, China, and active as DJ and sound curator in the US since 2000, Zhao has organized critically acclaimed long running events from Improvisation and Sound Art to Experimental Techno.

    Yeah, the radio here is actually a little program that looks up "similar artists" to what you have in your library and plays whatever last.fm has available. I don't like it because for one, it's not free, and it can sometimes play really awful shit. I see you got the photo thing, so that's cool, hehehe.
