Born outside of Moscow, Russia 1986, DJ Alibi (Mikhail Galkin) has been always been a child of music. At an early age, Alibi started finding his creative and expressive voice through multiple instruments. His first intstrument would be violin (age 4), with piano, trumpet, bass, guitar, and others to follow. The possibilities of how to use his musical voice multiplied when he was given a record by The Beatles at the age of 7. This led young Alibi to immerse himself in the works of other Western artists like BB King, Duke Ellington, and Bob Marley.
At the age of 12, Alibi’s family moved to Toronto, Canada where his love of music followed him. With Toronto’s proximity to America and diverse ethnic make-up, it is no wonder that DJ Alibi would be introduced to Hip-Hop. Within six months of living in his new hometown, Alibi had already made his first beat utilizing his newest instruments: turntables and samplers.
In 2005, the talented then 19-year old sent a CD to Thes One (of People Under the Stairs) who immediately realized the talent in Alibi’s production. The CD Alibi sent to Thes (which got him his deal with Tres) was filled with lush and sophisticated arrangements that push musical boundaries and defy post hip-hop labeling. Alibi shies away from the title prodigy, but to Thes and the rest of the staff at Tres Records, prodigy is a useful word to describe the talent of DJ Alibi.
