D4L is a rap group with members Fabo (Lefabian Williams), Mookie Bankhead (Dennis Butler), Stoney AKA Stuntman (Adrian Parks) and Shawty Lo (Carlos Walker) from Atlanta. They formed in 2003 and emerged in late 2005 with the hit single “Laffy Taffy”, which reached number one on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 in January 2006. With a solid 175,000 downloads, it can truly be seen as a digital bestseller. Their debut album, Down for Life, was released on November 8, 2005. They are signed to Mike Jones’s Record label, Ice Age Entertainment.

D4L have been noted to have tensions with another rap group from Atlanta, Dem Franchize Boyz. D4L claims that Dem Franchize Boyz stole their dance (called “Doin’ It”) from them. Sources have opposing reactions on the validity of these claims. In their new single, “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me,” D4L starts out by saying “You fuckin’ thieves.” They were referring to Dem Franchize Boyz and the controversy.

D4L are among the many new age Hip-Hop groups criticized for their blatant materialism and extremely simple production methods. Their massive mainstream success is said by many of the more traditional Hip-Hop fans and artists to largely reflect Hip-Hop music becoming increasingly primitive and simple, almost to the point of complete caricature of modern African American music. Alternatively, they are also credited with pioneering the new subgenre of snap.
