(1980 – present)

There are three artists called Cynic.

1. Formed in Florida, United States in 1987, Cynic is a band that recorded a few demos before moving to a highly complex form of influenced / , manifested in their seminal album, 1993’s Focus, which for over a decade was the band’s only official release.

Cynic disbanded in 1994 due to artistic differences while working on their second album, but regrouped in 2007 to perform a series of shows. The reunion was successful, with the group also performing a new song, entitled Evolutionary Sleeper, a composition in the unique style of Focus. This was a harbinger of things to come, as the group recorded two additional tracks, Integral Birth and Adam’s Murmur and then signed a contract with Season of Mist for two albums. Their second album, Traced in Air, was released on November 17, 2008 in Europe and November 25, 2008 in North America.

They released Re-Traced, a collection of re-workings of songs off Traced in Air, in 2010. This album features a different style that has been described as “space science fiction prog-folk”. The album also includes the new track Wheels Within Wheels, which Cynic felt fit better on this album than Traced in Air.

I love everything that Cynic has done up until their latest. I can barely get through it. Paul's vocals are a disappointment. And some of those chord progressions are just gross.

After seeing how pop music in disguise can be construed as something “unique” after touring with Animals As Leaders and discovering Sumerian Records, Cynic further desecrate their name by hiring the same PR firm that Opeth and Ulver consult with when writing their testosterone sapping abominations. The end result: Coldplay with ADHD. The only element retained from their past are their Holdsworth-esque lead noodlings, but there is no metal to be found here. Even the vocoder was dropped for choir boy whining and multi-tracked prepubescent crying, taking the forefront in songs that emotionally peak in a way that give them the feel of one of those “deep” Adele songs that go viral on Facebook.

I like Focus a lot. Their masterpiece. Then I got their 2nd album Traced in Air and I liked it. Years later, I'm not so really into Traced in Air. I didn't get around to getting the other stuff after that album. I have no idea if I'll get their newest album.

"Why does Traced in Air have more plays than Focus?" I was gonna say it's probably due to people naming the re-release all kinds of different ways, such as: but it still doesn't seem to make up for the 20k listeners. Oh well, to be fair though, I can see why TiA would appeal to a larger audience.
